Through our friend Bryn Mooser from Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ), we were fortunate to be introduced to Father Rick Frechette and Conan Conaboy from Saint Damien Hospital. For many months after the earthquake we searched for a property to build shelters on for homeless families living in tent camps.
When we learned about Father Rick’s work in Haiti, and saw the outstanding hospital care and services available at the NPFS complex, we knew instantly that we finally found the perfect location for our container homes. GiveLove is very happy to contribute to their on-going efforts and support these amazing programs in whatever way that we can.
Father Rick Frechette started St. Damien’s first medical center in Haiti in 1989. The new St. Damien Hospital, which opened in 2006 in Tabarre, is a premier 45,000 square foot medical facility. Funded through private contributions worldwide, these hospitals provide a sanctuary for sick children completely free of charge.
GiveLove has donated over 18 shipping containers and building supplies for the housing project, and is overseeing construction. Work on the project started in August 2010, and the homes and classroom units have already provided emergency shelter and permanent living spaces for over 350 children.
Our dorms and classrooms will provide a safe, long-term shelter for hundreds of young children from the Angels of Light Program, and teenage girls from the St. Don Bosco Program.
